This page is general information to help you understand whether you might qualify. It is not legal advice. Every case is different, and only a legal consultation with Attorney James Betzold can determine whether you are eligible.
Immigration law is complicated, and the rules have changed a lot in the past two years. Whether you are trying to bring a loved one to the U.S., protect yourself from deportation, renew a document, or become a citizen, the right information can make all the difference.
Betzold Law, also known as VisaFeliz, is led by Attorney James Betzold. We help immigrants and families across the country by phone and video. Below is an overview of the kinds of cases we handle, with links to learn more about each one.
You may benefit from talking with an immigration attorney if:
Citizenship (naturalization). Many permanent residents can apply to become U.S. citizens after 5 years with a green card, or 3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen. Other requirements include time living in the U.S., good moral character, and passing English and civics tests. Recent policy changes mean officers now look more closely at each applicant’s history, so a review before applying is wise.
Green card renewal and removing conditions. Most green cards must be renewed every 10 years. People who got a two-year “conditional” green card through a recent marriage must ask to remove the conditions before the card expires to keep their status.
Work permits. Many people with pending cases or certain statuses may qualify for permission to work. Since late 2025, most renewals no longer get an automatic extension while they are pending, so timing matters more than ever.
Case status checks. If your case seems stuck or you received a confusing notice, we can review where things stand and what it may mean for you.
Immigration court and removal defense. If you are in deportation proceedings, you may still have options, such as asylum, cancellation of removal, or other forms of relief. Having an attorney in immigration court can make a real difference.
Many things can affect whether you qualify for an immigration benefit, including:
Some of these problems can be forgiven with a waiver. Others cannot. Only a careful review of your full history can tell.
In many Latin American countries, a “notario público” is a trained lawyer. In the United States, a notary public is not a lawyer and cannot give immigration legal advice.
Under U.S. law, only these people can give you immigration legal advice or represent you:
Notarios, “immigration consultants,” and tax preparers who offer to “fix your papers” may file the wrong applications, miss deadlines, or file something that puts you at risk of deportation. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed result, asks you to sign blank forms, or keeps your original documents. If you are unsure, ask to see the person’s attorney license or accreditation.

The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and is not legal advice. Reading this page, contacting our office, or scheduling a case evaluation does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every immigration case is different and depends on its own facts, history, and the law in effect at the time. Immigration laws, policies, and court decisions change often, and this information (current as of October 2026) may not reflect the most recent changes. Meeting a requirement described here does not mean you qualify or that any application will be approved. Eligibility can only be determined through a legal consultation with Attorney James Betzold, who will review your individual situation. Do not act, or decide not to act, based on this page alone.
